The internet is a never-ending source of crappy rumors, but if ever there were a time I hoped there were some truth behind one, this is it. There’s been much buzz about Jena Malone since being added to the cast of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The original speculation was that Malone would be playing Carrie Kelley, the female Robin from The Dark Knight Returns miniseries. However, the latest reports are saying she’ll be playing someone else: one Miss Barbara Gordon.
Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon and a heroine known as both Batgirl and Oracle in the DC Universe. The recent reports don’t indicate which heroic alter ego, if any, Barbara will take on in this film but it would be really cool to see Batgirl in the also rumored Ben Affleck Batman (Batffleck) movie.
The most famous portrayal of Barbara Gordon comes from Yvonne Craig, who played Batgirl on the live-action Batman TV Series in the 1960’s. And Barbara Gordon, as Oracle, is rumored to have a role in TNT’s pilot, Titans.
Jena Malone has proved her bad-assery in roles for The Hunger Games film series, Sucker Punch, Into the Wild, Donnie Darko, True Blood TV series, and of course the most bad-ass of them all: Stepmom. No, seriously. I dare you to watch that without crying.
After legitimately watching the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer at least 101 times, I could not possible be more hyper-pumped for March 2016. Not only do we FINALLY get to see Wonder Woman in action, we possibly get Barbara Gordon. It’s always great to see talented actresses being cast in strong female superhero roles. We know a solo Wonder Woman movie is in the works; can we hope for a Batgirl movie, too? I hope the DC Cinematic Universe keeps the pleasant surprises coming.
